Fundraisers

I want to update you on a few fundraisers we have planned. First, I have a conference call tomorrow with Steve Cunningham at Keeneland about clean up for fall meet. Second, I have requested dates for Amazon gift wrapping and will send those out. Finally, I need 3 volunteers to assist me in planning a fundraiser on Saturday, November 12th. The event is called "Men Who Cook" and features teams of 2-6 men who prepare sample sizes of any dish they want. Tickets are sold to taste the food and the fun comes in decorating your table or dish themed costumes. For example, one group made lace cookies and called themselves "Men in Lace."

Mr. Diaz has approved our use of the school on the 12th of November and I need a few volunteers to help make this event possible. I was a part of planning the event in Tuscaloosa, AL, and here's a link to the article about it - http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/news/20150803/focus-on-senior-citizens-to-hold-fundraiser-friday

It's a lot of fun and comes with a good profit margin. Plus it will help raise awareness about Spanish Immersion. Please let me know if you want to be a part of any of these fundraisers.

Bank Account Created

I have successfully opened our bank account for the 2017 Costa Rica Trip. We have established an organizational account at the UK Federal Credit Union. I have created a pay pal business account that can generate invoices for all students. Once I test it and ensure the links are working properly I will send this link out to all the families. Currently we are only asking for a $250 deposit. If you would like to mail a check, those can be made out to "BSMS Costa Rica Trip" and sent to my address - 1773 Battery Street, Lexington, KY 40509.

Spring 2016 Parent Information Meeting

Buenos Dias! We had our first parent meeting on Monday, May 16, 2016, to discuss details about the Spanish Immersion Program’s 8th grade trip to Costa Rica. Attached is the PowerPoint we shared with those present. As we begin the planning stage, I am pleased to announce that Mr. Matthew Deffendall has agreed to be our Trip Coordinator. This is the 14th year of this trip and it works best with a parent organizer. Once again our Costa Rica Tour Leader with be Dr. Ballestero who has been with us every year and brings a wealth of knowledge as a native of Costa Rica.

Mr. Deffendall and I met today to go over the logistics and for me to pass the baton on to him moving forward. A deposit of $250 will be required by August 17, 2016. A detailed schedule of payment information, options and fundraising opportunities will be mailed to you over the summer. If you are interested in being a part of the organizing committee, please email Mr. Deffendall at matthew.deffendall@gmail.com.

Mr. Deffendall is a native of New Orleans, LA, and has lived in Lexington for the past 16 years. He has two daughters in the Spanish Immersion Program (Caitlin – 7th grade and Elizabeth – 2nd grade at Liberty Elementary). For the past 11 years he has worked at the University of Kentucky and as an adjunct faculty member in the College of Communication and Information he has led two education abroad programs in London, England, for first generation students.

With our leadership team in place (Dr. Ballestero and Mr. Deffendall), I am excited to see our largest SIP trip ever to Costa Rica come to fruition. Mr. Deffendall will establish a blog to keep you updated over the summer and as always I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

Adios!
